A Sample Graduation Speech for Elementary School Students

As I stand before you today, I am well aware that what you require from me, first and foremost, is brevity. And I assure you, I will not take up too much of your time.

In fact, if I had just a few minutes to talk to all of you young graduates, this is precisely what I would like to say. Here I'll try my hand at writing a graduation speech, not merely to discover if I can conquer the form, but also for other reasons.

For one, it's difficult to say something inspirational without being banal. And another reason is that the audience is eager to get on with the celebration, so that they can proceed to some serious reveling. Some of you may have heard speeches before, and we all know that sometimes speakers are chosen for their eminence in a particular field rather than their speaking or writing skills.

As someone who has sat through many graduation speeches, I've naturally wondered why they often seem so bad. But today, I'd like to share with you an example of what a truly great graduation speech can look like.

This is a speech by Neil Postman, a renowned critic, writer, and professor at New York University, who passed away in 2003. He was also awarded the George Orwell Award for Clarity in Language by the National Council of Teachers of English in 1987.

Here's a quote from his speech: 'To graduate is to enter the adult world with all its responsibilities, but it is also to leave behind the sheltered world of childhood and adolescence.'

As you go forth into this new chapter of your lives, I hope that Neil Postman's words will inspire you to make the most of every opportunity. Congratulations, graduates!
